When I closed my eyes that night, I could see the tassels coming toward me. Lesson : I learned that making money took a lot more effort than I thought it would. Detasselers pack a lunch and take it with them. This makes sense, because there is nothing to eat in the middle of a corn field unless you bring it with you.
With my newly found appreciation of the value of a dollar, I started keeping track of how much my lunches cost. I started buying bulk containers of lunch items, like applesauce and chips instead of the convenient, but more expensive single serving sizes. As I started receiving a paycheck and keeping better track of my money, I saw how quickly expenses can burn up any money that you make if you are not careful.
I could easily spend a full day's earnings in a few minutes at the mall buying clothes or going to the movies with friends. Since my parents were covering my basic expenses for food, shelter, and clothing, I was able to save almost all of the money that I brought home.
This made me realize the benefits of having low expenses. The teacher who hired me had a contract with the seed corn company for thousands of dollars to detassel the field. The seed corn company that contracted the detasseling was able to sell the seed corn they produced for hundreds of thousands of dollars — or maybe more.
There were plenty of teenagers in the area who were willing to work hard over the summer for this wage. The value of the contract to detassel a few acres of the field was thousands of dollars. The seed corn company was willing to pay to have a contractor hire workers and take care of managing the work.
It took more skill and a higher level of responsibility to manage the overall detasseling of several acres to meet a schedule, and there are fewer people competing to be contractors and manage a crew.
High quality seed corn hybrids bring top dollar on the market since they produce higher yields and result in more money for the farmers who plant them. There are only a handful of major seed corn producers selling top performing seed corn. Major seed corn companies make millions of dollars selling seed corn. Lesson : I learned that moving up the value chain is the way to make bigger bucks. Sometimes during the long hours in the cornfield, I would think about how much I was getting paid.
How much was I making per minute? How much was I making per tassel? The hard work pays off when you receive all your pay cheques at the end of the season. But WR has great crew leaders with funny jokes, good training and good safety which helps a lot. The WR Detasseling working season fits perfectly with my summer schedule. There are enough hours to make money but not to exhaust us.
I enjoy working with old and new friends. The hard work is not only rewarded by money, but also with a good entry on my resume. I really enjoyed working with WR this year. Corn was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Personally I think they take safety really seriously, Especially with the Covid Pandemic. We had to wear masks, gloves and face shields on the bus to insure safety for everyone. Working with WR is a phenomenal experience! I got to meet new friends and great crew leaders.
I enjoyed the steady work and safe environment. This is my third summer with WR and I would encourage any teen to walk the fields with us! This summer was my fourth year working for WR Detasseling. These are the best detasselers on our cleaning crews and generally work to the end of the season.
WR maintains an outstanding record for employee safety. This is an achievement that is held in great esteem, but it is also necessary for continued success year over year. Employee safety and satisfaction are two of several factors that are used to measure the success of a season. WR equips every bus with first aid supplies and additional PPE. It is WR policy that all of our workers are provided with precautionary PPE to protect and keep them safe. If wearing long shorts, soccer, baseball, or high knee socks that meet your shorts no skin can be shown between socks and shorts Remove boots and change to tied comfortable walking shoes no crocs Wearing sunglasses and prescription glasses are an option to safety glasses as you will be wearing a shield as well Carrying a small water bottle with you is suggested as long as both hands are free to work.

Why Do We Detassel Corn. For kids like Makylee Ailes, hard work is made a little easier by having friends out in the field, too. Detasseling may be hotter than scooping ice cream and dirtier than checking groceries, but teens across Nebraska will load into school buses and drive out into the countryside to make some extra money this month, because wet spring or not, the corn keeps growing.
